One Piece: The Truth About Devil Fruits Is Finally Revealed
One Piece eventually reveals the riddle of the Devil Fruits' origins in a surprising surprise that fans of the anime have been anticipating for decades.
SPOILERS for Chapter #1069 of One Piece
In One Piece, the Devil Fruits' secret is ultimately revealed. Dr. Vegapunk, the brilliant scientist who researched these enigmatic things for decades, explains Devil Fruits and their mystery twenty-five years after their appearance in the first chapter of the book. According to legend, Devil Fruits are an expression of people's yearning for change and progress, which the fruits' tremendous talents make possible.
Among the numerous mysteries that One Piece fans hope to have resolved in the anime, the secret of Devil Fruits is possibly the most important. Despite the fact that Devil Fruits have been there from the first chapter when Luffy ate the (alleged) Gomu Gomu no Mi, their origins have remained a mystery. The only thing we know about them is that eating one grants you tremendous supernatural skills classified into three categories: Logia, Paramecia, and Zoan.
Devil Fruits, on the other hand, have some laws and limitations. Most notably, Devil Fruit consumers lose their ability to swim (later explained as a vulnerability to still water), and no one can consume more than one Devil Fruit without dying (except Blackbeard, for unknown reasons). There is also one Devil Fruit of each variety, which will respawn in the nearest regular fruit if the user dies.
The long-awaited manga appearance of Dr. Vegapunk signified the beginning of the unraveling of many of One Piece's major mysteries. According to a Reddit thread providing chapter #1069 spoilers, Vegapunk explains what Devil Fruits are to the other Straw Hat while observing Luffy use his Gear Fifth transformation against Rob Lucci. Devil Fruits, according to scientists, are signs of a desired next stage in the possible evolution of life.
Each Devil Fruit user represents a possible future for mankind, and the Fruits' abilities are the fulfillment of people's dreams. These 'deviations' from the normal progression of things, on the other hand, are seen as 'unnatural,' and draw the wrath of Mother Nature herself, in the shape of the sea, which rejects Devil Fruit users.
DEVIL FRUITS: The Manifestation Of Humanity's 'Desire' Are Devil Fruits
Dr. Vegapunk's explanation raises more questions than it answers. It is unknown how and when humankind's 'wishes' or 'desires' took form in the Devil Fruits, whether this is a continuing process or whether it occurred in the past. The latter explanation is more feasible, considering Devil Fruits are likely linked to another major One Piece mystery, the Great Kingdom, which vanished 800 years before the series began.
This may be supported by Vegapunk's statement that Luffy, in his Gear Fifth form, resembles the Sun God Nika depicted in the ancient manuscripts he has researched. Fans of One Piece were previously aware of Nika's ties to the world's strange history, including the Great Kingdom and the Void Century, but Vegapunk's revelation adds Devil Fruits to the mix.
This interpretation positions Devil Fruits as a symbol of the importance of 'desire' as a significant idea in the universe of One Piece, potentially in contrast to 'willpower,' which is symbolized by the series' other primary source of powers, Haki. According to Vegapunk, a person who consumes a Devil Fruit "lives a wholly foreign existence" created by the power of imagination, although how this process works is yet unknown.
Perhaps it has something to do with the enigmatic 'inherited will' that exists within some Devil Fruits, although everything is still speculation at this point, as Vegapunk concedes in this chapter. This implies that no matter how unexpected and thrilling these Devil Fruit revelations are, One Piece fans may still expect a lot more in the future.
